What does “teemana-quality” mean?
Our guidelines and our vision:
Development partnership: alternative – sustainable – responsible – global – controlled – creation-conscious
It is important to us that our customers have confidence in our products – especially because we consider them as partners in our work! To this end, we would like to present some key points of our activities:
Development Partnership: If Africa sells goods to Europe today, prices are on the ground – even worse than in some times of slavery. That is why, for example, we do not buy Moringa in Tanzania by paying 10 or 20% more than the local market value, but 3000 percent (thirty times). Only in this way can our growers and harvesters there send their children to schools that deserve this word.
Alternative: teemana is also a philosophy: to produce goods in such ways that our world can still exist for millions of years and feed humanity. But we believe that the EU organic label used in the EU is not sufficient for this vision. WWF Switzerland also criticises: “There are no demands with regard to overall operation, eco-balancing areas, climate protection and social conditions. In addition, the use of fertilizers, crop rotation, consideration of valuable protected areas and animal welfare are only partially regulated. Overall, there is a lack of concrete measures to ensure targeted implementation.”“(1)
Sustainable: Some of our farmers in Germany who produce our goods have the organic seal. There are now a whole series of organic labels and organic certifications; but some of them are so expensive (e.g. the EU organic seal costs around 1000 euros per year!) that a small farm in Germany (and especially in Africa!!!) that only produces a few kilograms of goods for us cannot pay for these certificates and annual inspection visits (1000 euros is the average annual salary of two gardeners in sub-Saharan Africa). However, it is precisely such small farms that we would like to promote and encourage organic and sustainable agriculture. An example: Artemisiatee is also cultivated and harvested jointly by some parishes in Germany. With the proceeds we can support development aid projects of our partners in Africa and Asia.
Responsible: teemana quality means that the producers known to us personally only produce such goods that are:
- exposed to non-ionising radiation for preservation
- not produced by and with genetically modified organisms
- not produced with the use of synthetic plant protection products
- not produced with easily soluble mineral fertilisers
Global/Controlled: Imports of raw materials and products from third countries are prohibited in
Europe strictly regulated. In the case of organic products, crop rotation (two, three and four-field management) should also be varied. Furthermore, minimum stable and open spaces are specified. Animals are fed organically produced feed without the addition of antibiotics and performance enhancers.
teemana, however, has higher standards than just “organic”. We want to pursue a tender agriculture in which people, animals and plants are respectfully involved. Thus we contribute a little bit to the recovery of our earth, yes, our society.
Conscious of creation: God’s Word says in the Bible, Hosea 4:6: “My people are perishing because of a lack of knowledge. So can there be a solution? We want our work to be a building block of God’s solution for Africa so that the “begging bowl of the world” can be transformed into the “bread basket of the world”.
